SCARBOROUGH (July 12, 2018) – Scarborough and Rouge Hospital’s (SRH) Scarborough Regional Nephrology Program (SRNP) officially opened a new satellite hemodialysis unit at the hospital’s Centenary site on July 9.
“The 12-station, interim unit will serve current patients who are receiving dialysis at the General site,” said Dr. Paul Tam, chief of the nephrology program. “This will ease the pressure on our existing resources trying to accommodate ongoing growth, and enable greater access to dialysis treatments and services within Scarborough, resulting in a more efficient care experience for our patients.”
In addition to improving access to care for patients with end stage renal disease, the new unit is expected to enable future nephrology program integration initiatives and standardization across the General and Centenary sites; add to the scope of practice for practitioners at the Centenary site by introducing a specialized service; and encourage ongoing recruitment resulting in a more robust workforce.
SRH continues to listen and respond to the needs of the community, and is also awaiting approval from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care for a permanent in-centre hemodialysis unit at the Centenary site. If a permanent unit is approved, the 12 stations from the new interim unit would be transferred to the permanent unit.
