Scarborough Health Network (SHN) is improving the use of eReferrals, specifically for the FIT Positive Colonoscopy Service. Healthcare Providers will be able to more seamlessly submit patient referrals electronically with the SHN team booking and informing your patients within hours of receiving your request.
Through our FIT Positive Colonoscopy Service, SHN aims to provide rapid colon cancer care to our community, as conveniently as possible. It has been established to provide seamless care for those who have tested positive from the Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT), who may be at an average risk of developing colorectal cancer.
The FIT Positive Colonoscopy Service will reduce wait times for FIT testing and colonoscopies for patients who need them. The FIT test is a stool-based test that detects early signs of colorectal cancer and/or pre-cancerous lesions.
FIT testing was introduced as the standard for colorectal screening by Cancer Care Ontario in 2018 and a phase out of the previous testing method, the guaiac fecal occult blood test (gFOBT) took place throughout 2019.
What We Offer
- Scheduled appointment for FIT screening within 1 week of receipt of referral.
- Access to a patient care coordinator who works with family physicians to ensure patients are seen as quickly as possible, and guides patients through the clinic process.
- Ability to see specialists, such as gastroenterologists and general surgeons, within the clinic, instead of travelling to other offices or hospitals.

The FIT Positive Colonoscopy Service is open on Mondays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
