“It doesn’t matter how different we are. What matters is that we are all serving in healthcare, a part of SHN, and that we help each other.”
After coming from Pakistan to Alberta, where a lot of my family currently lives, I began researching job opportunities and discovered the field of ultrasound. It seemed like a perfect fit so both my wife and I completed our ultrasound education.
We passed the registry exams and started in clinics where we just fell in love with the work. Both of our families are here – some in the U.S. and some here – but mostly we are all together in Ontario.
A lot has changed over the years. When I talk with my kids, they are learning about positive things like inclusion, diversity, and understanding each other’s differences. It’s so amazing, it’s something I haven’t seen elsewhere.
Scarborough is just one of the best examples. Many immigrants start their new lives here, and you see that even driving down the road past businesses and shops. You definitely see it at the hospital.
When I think about the people I have met and the friends I have made – there are so many people that I’ve known for years. Every day that I get my morning coffee, I run into people that know me by name and we call to each other. It doesn’t matter how different we are. What matters is that we are all serving in healthcare, a part of SHN, and that we help each other.
The people here are so resilient and I think it’s been built up over time and experience. I feel proud to come into work every day.
