Growing mental health care in Scarborough

With one of the largest hospital-based mental health and addictions programs in Ontario, and an increased need for mental health care across our health system, Scarborough Health Network (SHN) is committed to removing barriers and challenges in accessing mental health services.

As we celebrate Mental Health Week from May 6-12, it is essential to highlight the practical advancements we are making within Scarborough.

Take our new Community Mental Health Centre opening this spring, designed to streamline access to mental health services and ensure comprehensive support is readily available to anyone who needs it. Entirely funded by generous donors, the new centre will bring together our ambulatory and outpatient mental health services at one central location, in the heart of Scarborough’s Golden Mile district, for the first time.

This community-based focus emphasizes the importance of helping patients access compassionate care in the most appropriate setting.

Another example comes through the new Slaight Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) program in partnership with Strides Toronto and the Slaight Family Foundation, who are helping us change the lives of Scarborough youth with complex mental health conditions. Running out of SHN’s Shoniker Clinic near Centenary Hospital, this is the first comprehensive DBT program in Scarborough.
