Scarborough Health Network (SHN) is thrilled to announce that Dr. Paul Tam, our Chief and Medical Director of Nephrology, has been honoured with the Laureate Award by the American College of Physicians (ACP). The award was presented at the ACP Ontario Chapter Annual Meeting on November 4, 2023.

The Laureate is a prestigious award given to Fellows of the ACP who demonstrate an exceptional commitment to excellence in medical care, education, research, and community service. Dr. Tam’s dedication to nephrological study and his impactful contributions to managing kidney disease led to ACP members in Ontario nominating him for the award.

Dr. Tam, who is a Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Award recipient, was also recognized earlier this year by The Kidney Foundation of Canada with the George de Veber Distinguished Service Award. He is a leader in the community and has been integral to the creation of the Bridletowne Neighbourhood Community Hub – which broke ground this year and will be home to expanded SHN dialysis programming.

In addition to officially receiving the award at the ACP Ontario Chapter Annual meeting, Dr. Tam gave the Laureate presentation on the topic of “The Evolution of Chronic Kidney Disease Programs in Ontario,” outlining the challenges and requirements of providing care to a diverse urban demographic, and effective strategies for securing vital resources for diverse populations.

When receiving the award, Dr. Tam acknowledged the support of the institution as well as all of the team members, colleagues and external partners who worked with him through the years to improve kidney care.

Join us in congratulating Dr. Paul Tam on this well-deserved achievement, which reflects SHN’s continued dedication to shaping the future of healthcare!
