SHN submitted the Stage 1.3 Functional Program Birchmount Hospital Phase 1A Redevelopment proposal to the Ministry of Health in June as part of the Capital Planning process, signifying an exciting milestone on the journey to “Build It Forward” for the future of our community’s healthcare!

The new Birchmount Hospital will be the largest redevelopment in SHN’s history, and the first phase of SHN’s broader redevelopment. Known as Birchmount Redevelopment Phase 1A, this phase proposes a multi-storey tower and podium that will collectively house our new emergency department, operating rooms, inpatients beds, and diagnostic imaging; expanded parking capacity; and renovations and upgrades to the existing hospital.

The Stage 1.3 Functional Program Birchmount Hospital Phase 1A Redevelopment submission was informed through collaboration with staff, medical staff, volunteers, learners, partners, and our community through meetings, town halls, surveys, community forums, and much more.

SHN is committed to updating all SHN stakeholders as information becomes available for this exciting project. In the meantime, visit SHN.ca/builditforward to learn more about the Ministry of Health’s Capital Planning Process.

Fundraising for our Local Share

SHN has big plans underway to “Build It Forward” for healthcare in Scarborough, with redevelopment projects at all three SHN hospitals that will enable us to realize SHN’s overarching Master Plan.

When a new hospital is built in Ontario, the provincial government agrees to pay the majority of the hospital construction costs, but not the entire cost. The communities served by the hospital are responsible for a local share of the project. The “local share” of financing the project is a government requirement, estimated to be between 25-30 per cent of the total project cost, and includes a portion of the total project cost, as well costs for new equipment, furniture, fixtures, and parking lot infrastructure.

SHN’s redevelopment projects will be a multi-year investment that will dramatically expand health services in Scarborough. The “Love, Scarborough” fundraising campaign finances SHN’s “local share” and will help improve SHN facilities, expand our capabilities, and offer more care to more people.
