As National Volunteer Week approaches in Canada (from April 27-May 3), Scarborough Health Network (SHN) is shining a spotlight on the invaluable contributions of our volunteers. This year’s theme, “Volunteers Make Waves,” underscores the power, impact, and importance of individual and collective volunteer efforts across the country. Just like a wave, volunteering is about building movements and creating positive change.
At SHN, over 1000 volunteers are the heartbeat of the community, providing essential support to patients, their families, and staff. These volunteers are integral to SHN’s operations and embody the spirit of our mission, vision, and values. They provide assistance, uplift spirits, and support fundraising initiatives, making a significant impact on the patient experience.
We asked a few of our dedicated volunteers about their experiences and passion for their meaningful work. Here is what they shared:

Q: What advice would you offer to someone who is just beginning their volunteering journey?
A: “As a volunteer, you are the starting point. You are the face of the hospital when a patient first comes in. Being nice, patient, and calm offers patients a sense of ease as they navigate through the hospital.”
– George Psaila, volunteer at the information desk at Centenary Hospital

Q: What is your favourite part about volunteering?
A: “Every time I come in for a shift, I hope to be in the right place at the right time to help alleviate patients during a stressful time, while offering them a sense of peace. Being able to support clinics and the staff here at SHN is just wonderful.”
– Angelina Antony Canicious, HELP Program volunteer on the transitional care unit at General Hospital

Q: What inspired you to dedicate your time and efforts to serving at SHN?
A: “My husband and my grandson were patients here for many years. After I retired, I decided to give back to the hospital with my time. It’s a very nice environment to work in and I really enjoy it.”
-Inge Cebek, volunteer at the post-op desk at Centenary Hospital
Volunteering in healthcare offers deeply personal rewards. For some, it is the joy of helping others; for others, it is the chance to make meaningful connections. Regardless of their motivations, SHN is profoundly grateful for the contributions of our volunteers, particularly, the gift of their time.
We invite our community to recognize and appreciate the volunteers who make a difference every single day the next time you visit SHN. Their efforts enhance the lives of everyone they touch and strengthen our health network.
