Scarborough Health Network (SHN) continues to Build it Forward with our new Northpine Diagnostic Imaging (DI) Department, which is on track to officially open on February 18! This facility will double the footprint of imaging services at General Hospital to ensure we meet our community’s healthcare needs into the future. With construction completed, the next step was installing and configuring the advanced imaging equipment and technology for the department. Now staff are undergoing applications training in the new space, which will be one of the most modern and innovative DI facilities in Toronto.

Starting February 18, DI services at SHN General Hospital will begin to be provided in the Northpine DI Department for most outpatient appointments. SHN staff will continue to keep patients, families, and community members informed about when and where to go for DI services as part of their booking and when they arrive at the hospital.

This project has been made possible through funding from the Ontario Ministry of Health, as well as thanks to the Love, Scarborough campaign and a transformative gift from the Northpine Foundation and donations from the community, other corporations, and generous individuals.

SHN recognizes the teams who have been instrumental in preparing for the opening of this department, allowing us to continue to enhance the care we offer and meet the growing needs of our community.

What Northpine DI brings to Scarborough

The Northpine DI Department will bring together and support SHN’s dedicated team of radiologists, medical radiation and imaging technologists (MRIT), specialized nurses, and other related staff, who perform over 333,000 diagnostic imaging exams annually across our health network.

Key features of the new department include:

  • An innovative breast imaging centre;
  • Dedicated suites for nuclear medicine, CT, ultrasound, and MRI – including the first 3-Tesla (3T) MRI in Scarborough with a magnet twice as powerful as SHN’s other machines;
  • A full interventional radiology unit with two procedure rooms, a preparation and recovery bay, and a dedicated nurse’s station; and
  • Increased accommodation and consideration for the cultural and privacy concerns of our diverse community.

We’re hiring! With the upcoming launch of our Northpine Diagnostic Imaging Department, SHN has exciting new opportunities for MRITs to join our team. Learn more at www.shn.ca/careers.
