On November 23, SHN is holding a Breast Health Screening Pop-up Day for community members ages 40 to 49! This screening event will take place in the Breast Health Centre at Centenary Hospital.
The Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) has expanded and Ontarians aged 40 to 49 can now self refer for mammograms. This change is vital for earlier detection and prevention of breast cancer. That’s why SHN is holding this breast screening pop-up with support from AstraZeneca, Hologic, Siemens Healthineers, Central East and Toronto Regional Cancer Programs, Scarborough Ontario Health Team (SOHT), and Scarborough Centre for Healthy Communities (SCHC).

Breast health awareness at SHN
The Breast Health Screening Pop-up Day is part of a series of breast cancer awareness and screening events SHN and partners have held for other communities. SHN supports and hosts these events in order to connect with racialized and cultural communities who benefit from focused outreach surrounding breast health. SHN looks forward to holding more of these events in line with our focus on equitable health care and education. Our health network plans to continue working with key health organizations and community groups to reach populations that may be underrepresented in breast health awareness, such as the Indigenous community.

During Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October 2024, SHN, The Olive Branch of Hope, Black Physicians’ Association of Ontario (BPAO), and other key partners held the Breast Health and Awareness Seminar for Black Communities. This was the second breast health awareness event for the Black community that SHN hosted, the first being in October 2023.
CityNews covered the Breast Health and Awareness Seminar, highlighting the OBSP’s expansion of self-referrals and its vitality to the Black community. Dr. Mojola Omole, SHN breast surgical oncologist and president of the BPAO, emphasized the importance of awareness and advocacy within the community. Watch it here.
This seminar also featured a video from the BPAO, following Dr. Omole having her very first mammogram at 45 years old at SHN’s General Hospital, guided by Michelle Jones, Charge Technologist and Breast Assessment Navigator. The video demonstrates the screening experience and that it’s normal to feel a bit nervous before a mammogram, but that the staff are there to make the process as comfortable and seamless as possible. Watch it here.
In September 2024, SHN came together with several health and community partners to host the Filipino Breast Health and Awareness Workshop. This was SHN’s largest breast health event with 98 participants, helping to raise awareness and encourage screening among different ethnic communities in Scarborough.
OMNI News Filipino covered the workshop, capturing the excellent turnout and warm community feeling that came with the event. Watch it here.
The full-day event, which took place in March 2024, offered expert panels of healthcare workers and patients with lived experience to bring awareness to breast cancer and share information on preventative screening, treatment options and how mental health and nutrition play a role in modifiable breast cancer risks and recovery.
