Summer of Vibes

Students walking together with sunshine behind them

Welcome to Summer of Vibes: a first-of-its-kind, student-driven healthcare and AI innovation sprint hosted by Scarborough Health Network (SHN) running from May – August, 2025. Offered through our SHN Research Institute Student Experience (RISE) program, it will bring together undergraduate, graduate, postgraduate and professional program students from diverse backgrounds – medicine, engineering, design, business, and more – to directly engage in real-world healthcare environments and solve pressing system-level challenges through the transformative lens of AI and technology.

Why join Summer of Vibes?

  • Unparalleled immersion: Be embedded within an active healthcare network while learning, building, and testing solutions that address genuine patient care and operational needs.
  • Collaborative environment: Work alongside peers from various disciplines to create meaningful healthcare innovations.
  • Hands-on experience: Engage in prototyping, testing and user interviews with guidance from SHN Research Institute mentors and hospital staff.
  • Be part of something new: There is no other student program in Canada that is structured quite like this to combine AI tools, healthcare operations, and clinical mentorship into one innovation ecosystem.

Weekly workflow

Students bring their concepts to work on at SHN’s Centenary Hospital. Our program follows a dynamic weekly rhythm designed to foster continuous creation and iteration:

  • Mondays: Kickstart new projects or advance existing ones showing traction. Dive into deeper work like literature reviews and research protocol design.
  • Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays: Open studio time for prototyping, testing and receiving system-level feedback.
  • Fridays: Mandatory in-person Demo Day, an event where students present healthcare innovations to clinicians, researchers, academics, industry partners, and other stakeholders for rapid-cycle critique and coaching. Enjoy pizza while you share your progress!

Additionally, students can attend extra in-person sessions each week for lectures, workshops, and activities covering startup skills, content creation, research design, and interview prep.

Participants will have access to a variety of tools and technologies, including:

  • Prototyping tools (Figma, Replit, Notion, GitHub, etc.)
  • AI tools (OpenAI, Ollama, and internal SHN Research Institute models)
  • Mentorship from SHN Research Institute clinicians and researchers
  • Test environments, datasets or simulations (when available)
  • Cloud and GPU resources for AI-driven projects

Whether you prefer no-code, low-code, or full-code approaches, we have the resources to support your project. This is a rare opportunity to experiment with cutting-edge tools while shaping solutions for active clinical settings.

  • Stipend: Students are compensated for their time with a stipend (details to follow).
  • Resources: SHN Research Institute provides tools, software, workspace access, and Demo Day food.

Fully engaged students often complete multiple projects, generating new research, supporting clinical workflows, or inspiring real-world product development. Summer of Vibes is not just another student internship; it is an innovation engine designed to accelerate ideas from draft to real-world healthcare impact – fast.
