Five years ago, Scarborough Health Network (SHN) launched a bold initiative to champion inclusive health care through our pioneering ROAD to Equity: Health Equity Certificate Program. This transformative program was created to equip health care professionals with the tools to advance accessibility, address systemic barriers, and reduce health disparities. Since its inception, it has made a powerful impact – empowering SHN staff and community partners to better serve Scarborough’s most vulnerable populations.

Celebrating a milestone moment

On June 11, SHN proudly marked the graduation of our fifth cohort with a virtual convocation ceremony. The event brought together members of our senior leadership team, program sponsors, facilitators, and special guest keynote speaker Dr. Stephanie Nixon, Vice Dean (Health Sciences) and Director (School of Rehabilitation Therapy) at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario.

A journey of learning and growth

Beginning in September 2024, this cohort engaged in a rich curriculum covering critical topics such as:

  • Indigenous health
  • Disability and social exclusion
  • Race, racism, and oppression
  • Refugee and newcomer health
  • Mental health and addictions
  • Gender and 2SLGBTQ+ inclusion
  • Income and employment
  • Housing and food security

As this chapter closes, our graduates reflect on how the program has deepened their understanding and strengthened their commitment to health equity. Hear some of their reflections:
