This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, SHN partnered with key community and health organizations to welcome community members, staff, and volunteers to our vibrant Filipino Breast Health Screening Pop-up event! Our technologists screened 69 people, 40 of whom received mammograms for the very first time.
OMNI News Filipino covered this impactful event, highlighting the strong turnout and warm community spirit at the CIBC Breast Clinic in the Northpine Diagnostic Imaging Department at General Hospital. The day offered same-day mammograms, music, wellness activities, giveaways, cultural food and drink, and educational sessions addressing cultural influences on breast health and screening. Attendees had the chance to ask questions about breast health, cancer care, and cultural stigma in a safe, inclusive space.
OMNI interviewed Jia Inacio, Manager of Diagnostic Imaging, who emphasized the importance of reaching out to Filipino communities to boost breast health awareness and screening, given the high incidence and mortality rates of breast cancer. This initiative aligns with SHN’s 2024-2029 Strategic Plan to engage Scarborough’s diverse communities where they are, raising awareness about breast health and screening.
The segment also featured SHN radiologist Dr. Christina Chingkoe, who discussed how screening aids early detection and effective treatment, particularly for Filipino populations, who tend to face breast cancer at younger ages than other groups.
