Construction to Build It Forward with the new Northpine Emergency Department (ED) at Centenary Hospital is officially underway. As we prepare to enter the next phase of this major redevelopment—the first in 50 years, thanks to support from the Ontario government and the Love, Scarborough campaign—we are committed to keeping you informed about how this construction and rapid expansion will affect our community, on a temporary basis.

Navigating our Centenary parking lot

Our first step in this multi-phased project was to create a temporary roadway in our north parking lot that will serve as part of a detour route to accommodate the next phase of construction.

Now, we need to work on the section of Neilson Road leading into the hospital, south of Ellesmere Road. We need to realign this roadway, which extends past the current ED towards the back of the hospital. This work will impact driving around the hospital and parking lot, and is planned to begin the week of December 16.

What this means for patients and visitors

IF YOU ARE DRIVING

  • Everyone will continue to be able to enter Centenary from Neilson Road.
  • Drop-offs can still be made at the ED using Neilson Road.
  • Drop-offs can still be made at the main North and East entrances.
  • A detour route will guide traffic to the south parking lot at the back of the hospital for individuals who wish to access the South Entrance (Margaret Birch Wing).
  • The regular roadway will be blocked, except to access the ED. Please follow the directional signs.

IF YOU ARE PARKING

  • Everyone will continue to be able to enter the north parking lot at the front of the hospital as usual.
  • To access the south parking lot (i.e. to go to the South Entrance/Margaret Birch Wing), please follow the detour and directional signs.
  • There will be designated parking spaces for patients and visitors (including accessible parking spaces) in the north and south parking lots, which will be clearly marked and located closest to the entrances.
  • Parking fees will remain the same.

IF YOU ARE TAKING PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

  • WheelTrans will continue to drop-off/pick-up at the North and East entrances, as well at the South Entrance (Margaret Birch Wing) using the detour.
  • TTC bus stops for drop-off/pick-up will not be affected

OTHER INFORMATION

  • There may be increased noise and vibration as a result of construction.
  • Fencing will be set up around the perimeter of the construction areas.
  • Anyone coming for an appointment or to visit a patient is encouraged to plan ahead and include extra time for parking.

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to transform Centenary Hospital to provide a superior experience for patients and families in Scarborough and beyond.
