Emergency Care
Our Emergency Departments have child- and family-friendly spaces to help ease the experience for young patients.
Kids Pass (Centenary, General)
Children brought to the Emergency Departments at our Centenary and General hospitals will be fast-tracked to our Kids Pass Clinics as appropriate.
Kids Short Stay Clinic at Birchmount
Children in our Emergency Department at Birchmount hospital who need further care may be seen in our new Kids Short Stay Clinic.
If your child has to stay at hospital
Children seen in our Emergency Departments at Centenary or General, will be admitted at those hospitals. For kids coming to emergency at Birchmount who need overnight care, they will be transferred to Centenary or General.
Kids Consultation Clinic
For a wide variety of general paediatric problems experienced by infants, children, and teens. Patients may be referred by their family doctor or from our Emergency Departments. This clinic is available seven days a week.

Inpatient Care
For some medical conditions or surgeries, children may need to stay in the hospital. We care for these young patients on our paediatric inpatient units at our Centenary and General hospitals, where we have welcoming teams of doctors, nurses and other health care staff.

Ronald McDonald Family Room
At our Centenary hospital, our kids care unit features a Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Toronto Family Room. This special space provides family members with a place to rest and recharge in the hospital, just steps away from where their sick child is being treated.

The Adolescent Medicine Clinic provides consultation and treatment for physical, developmental, cognitive, and mental health issues, including behavioural concerns, substance use, reproductive health issues, teen pregnancies, eating disorders, and other concerns.

Allergy and Immunology Clinic
The Allergy and Immunology Clinic offers testing and management of food, venom, and indoor/outdoor environmental allergies; adverse reactions to vaccines, and medications (including antibiotics); as well as management of atopic dermatitis/eczema, idiopathic anaphylaxis, chronic urticaria, and suspected mastocytosis. We also offer graded oral provocation challenges to foods, medications, and vaccines.

Scarborough Child Development Program
Our program provides assessments for children under six years who have a suspected developmental concern, such as autism, motor delays, or speech problems.
Bladder and Bowel Dysfunction Clinic
This clinic offers assessment and management of constipation and common urinary problems including daytime incontinence, nocturnal enuresis (bed wetting), recurrent urinary tract infections and voiding dysfunction.

Diabetic Education Clinic
The Diabetic Education Clinic provides counseling and support to children and their families who have recently been diagnosed with diabetes, or have been identified as being at high risk of developing diabetes.
Dermatology Clinic
Our Dermatology Clinic diagnoses and treats common and complex skin conditions, including eczema, acne, birthmarks, psoriasis, vitiligo, molluscum, and warts.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Diagnostic Clinic
- The Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Diagnostic Clinic provides assessment services by a multidisciplinary team for children and youth residing in Scarborough, Region of Durham, Haliburton County and City of Kawartha Lakes, Northumberland County, and Peterborough. Confirmation of prenatal alcohol exposure is required.
- Referring physicians should complete the Child Development Program Referral Form and fax to 416-292-9678 or email to FASD@shn.ca.
Gastroenterology Clinic and Endoscopy Program
The Gastroenterology Clinic and Endoscopy Program provides consultation, endoscopy, and follow-up care to children with gastrointestinal, liver, and nutritional problems.

Hematology Clinic
The Hematology Clinic offers consults for hematological issues, including anemia, thrombocytopenia, coagulation abnormalities, and neutropenia, as well as counselling and genetic testing for abnormal hemoglobin electrophoresis results.

The Healthy Outcomes Paediatric Program for Scarborough (HOPPS) is a specialty clinic for children and adolescents with body weight concerns. Offered jointly by SHN and several community partners, HOPPS supports young patients and their families in making important lifestyle changes that will lead to improved health, stronger bodies, and a better quality of life.
Nephrology Clinic
The Nephrology Clinic offer consults for kidney or hypertension-related issues, including nephrotic syndrome, proteinuria, hematuria, and kidney abnormalities. Renal biopsies are available for adolescents onsite, and can be arranged at SickKids Hospital for younger children.

The Neurology Clinic sees children with conditions such as epilepsy and seizures, stroke, headaches, concussion, movement disorders, neurogenetic diseases, congenital defects of the brain and spinal cord, and cerebral palsy.

Paediatric Oncology Satellite Clinic
SHN is proud to be a satellite clinic of the Paediatric Oncology Group of Ontario (POGO). As a POGO satellite, the clinic provides cancer care close to home for children in Scarborough. Working in partnership with the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), the clinic offers chemotherapy, blood work and transfusions, vital-sign monitoring, medication administration, X-rays, CT scans, and ultrasounds.

Paediatric occupational therapy services are available to children up to the age of five. Service is offered to children with developmental delays, neurological dysfunction, sensorimotor difficulties, or children who are experiencing difficulties with their day-to-day activities.
Care includes a comprehensive assessment of the child’s self-care, motor, perceptual and sensory skills. Services offered include direct therapy to improve skill levels, home programs, family education, consultation to schools, referral to community agencies, and re-evaluation as needed.

Rheumatology Clinic
The Rheumatology Clinic offers consults for a broad spectrum of rheumatic conditions, including juvenile idiopathic arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and vasculitides such as kawasaki disease, periodic fever syndromes, juvenile scleroderma, and juvenile dermatomyositis.

RSV Clinic
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) causes infection of the lungs and breathing passages and is a major cause of respiratory illness in young children. In order to protect at-risk infants, a treatment is provided monthly between November and March.

This clinic provides consultation, assessment, and management of scoliosis, a condition where a person’s spine has a sideways curve.

Sickle Cell Satellite Clinic
The Sickle Cell Satellite Clinic provides genetic counselling, physical examinations, vaccination updates, and access to related subspecialists (i.e. ophthalmology, respirology, etc.). The Clinic works in partnership with the Hospital for Sick Children.

We also offer limited speech and language therapy for children who have communication delays, as well as follow-up care for select infants following discharge from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
