CHAIR, BOARD OF DIRECTORS

At Scarborough Health Network (SHN), we do not just serve this community—we are a part of it. Every milestone we reach and every life we touch reflects the trust placed in us by thousands of families every day. Our SHN 365 (2024-2025) report to the community is more than a snapshot of the last fiscal year; it is a celebration of how we are unlocking impact that changes lives and opens doors to a healthier, more equitable future.

Thanks to record-breaking support, SHN Foundation granted its highest-ever funding to SHN, enabling critical infrastructure and technology projects. Together with generous donors, dedicated staff, and visionary leaders, we opened new doors to care—literally—with two modern facilities: the fully donor-funded Community Mental Health Centre and the Northpine Diagnostic Imaging Department at General Hospital. At the heart of this success is the community’s unwavering support for the Love, Scarborough campaign—an essential key to help us Build It Forward, along with support from the Government of Ontario.

We also broke down barriers to care through targeted health equity initiatives including expanding services to support Indigenous health, partnering with patients to improve care for individuals with sickle cell disease, and increasing access to cancer screening and education for Black and South Asian communities. By working in partnership with a wide network of organizations across social, mental, and physical care services, we are connecting people with the care they need no matter where they first access support.

Now in the second year of our Strategic Plan 2024–2029, we continue to advance health outcomes through a focus on healthcare education, transformative technology, multicultural health research, and strengthening health literacy across our diverse population. Our Community Advisory Council and Patient Family Advisors continue to play a vital role in shaping the development of new programs and services, ensuring that care is informed by the voices and experiences of those we serve.

Together, we are unlocking the future of care—one breakthrough, one partnership, one life at a time. The doors we open today lead to the discoveries, innovations, and lives transformed tomorrow—and Scarborough is leading the way.

Across our three hospitals—Birchmount, Centenary and General—and several community-based locations, we serve more than 850,000 people from the Scarborough community and beyond.

Unlocking Opportunity

At SHN, we are entering an exciting new chapter of transformation, building on the strong foundation we have established. The year ahead promises to be one of growth, innovation, and meaningful progress. From expanding access to care and education to strengthening research and infrastructure, our focus remains on excellence driven by innovation and compassionate care.

Here are five exciting initiatives we are looking forward to this year:

Illustrated medicine wheel and turtle.

Expanding Access and Equity

We will be implementing our new health literacy and Indigenous health strategies, and expanding outreach programs for individuals facing significant barriers to care.

Welcoming More Medical Learners

We will be welcoming our largest intake of medical students yet for the 2025–2026 academic year, in partnership with the University of Toronto’s Scarborough Academy of Medicine. We will also continue our work to adapt existing infrastructure to accommodate the growing scope of teaching and learning activities, including learner lounges, teaching and seminar spaces, on-call rooms, wellness spaces, clinical exam rooms, and more.

Boosting Research Capacity

We will be strengthening our research capabilities through SHN Research Institute, including bringing on more health researchers and developing a robust intellectual property framework that will safeguard innovations and maximize impact.

Breaking Ground on Major Projects

We will begin construction on the Scarborough Health Centre of Excellence at Centenary Hospital, which will increase access to healthcare in Scarborough, and break ground on the Northpine Emergency Department (ED)—the ED’s first major redevelopment in half a century. We will also expand dialysis capacity with 27 new hemodialysis stations across our Centenary and General hospitals.

Preparing for Accreditation Success

We are preparing for our next Accreditation Canada survey in October 2025, with a goal of achieving Exemplary Standing once again, in a demonstration of our commitment to the highest standards of quality and safety in healthcare.
