As part of our journey to Build It Forward and enhance our facilities to better serve our community, Scarborough Health Network (SHN) is getting started with construction for the new Northpine Emergency Department (ED) at Centenary Hospital.

Get ready to witness an extraordinary transformation as our ED undergoes a major redevelopment for the first time in half a century, thanks to support from the Ontario government and SHN Foundation’s Love, Scarborough campaign—paving the way for a superior experience for patients and families.

Imagine an ED with seamless patient flow, intuitive navigation, ample isolation rooms, and distinct areas for mental health and paediatric care. This is the future we are building for Scarborough!

Getting started with construction on December 2
Our first step in this multi-phased project is to create a temporary roadway in our north parking lot that will become part of a detour route to accommodate the next phase of construction. This work will begin on Monday, December 2.

What this means for patients and visitors

  • While there may be increased noise and vibration as a result of this construction, everyone will continue to be able to access Centenary Hospital—including the current ED—as usual, while the temporary roadway is being built.
  • There will be sufficient parking spaces available to patients and visitors in the north and south parking lots, however we encourage anyone coming for an appointment to plan ahead and include additional time for parking.
  • SHN is committed to ensuring a safe environment for everyone accessing our parking lots. Fencing will be set up around the perimeter of the construction areas for your protection.
  • We are committed to timely and transparent communication throughout this process, and we will continue to provide you with regular updates.
