about SHN 2030

What is SHN 2030 about?

SHN 2030 is our long-range initiative to plan, design, and build new hospital facilities for Scarborough. During the process, all SHN hospitals will continue to operate – with planned capital improvements – until the new facilities are fully operational.

This process has five stages that will happen over the next 15 to 20 years. Currently, SHN is just at the first stage. We are developing a proposal for a long-term plan for our programs, facilities, and sites within the health system context. This proposal will be submitted to the Ministry of Health, and must be approved before moving to Stage 2.

Engagement will occur at each stage with appropriate community, staff and physician representation, in increasing levels of detail.

What work has been done so far?

Over the past year we have been collecting data, speaking with community groups and patients, and engaging our hospital staff and physicians.

This has included:

  • Online Community Survey, completed by more than 1,500 Scarborough residents

  • Meetings with Community Partners

  • Sessions with our hospital leaders to look at long-term planning for clinical services

  • Developing projections for the space that we need for facilities, and coming up with options for our hospital sites

What are key considerations?

In order to develop options for our future facilities, we had to consider:

  • How will Scarborough’s population size and the number of patients using our hospitals change over the next 20 years?

  • What are the hospital services we will be providing to meet our community’s needs, and how should services be grouped?

  • What is the existing land size of SHN’s hospitals, how much room do we have for expansion, and what capacity do we require to care for patients into the future?

  • What is the state of our existing SHN hospital buildings and what is possible for us to renovate and upgrade to meet current and future standards?

WE ARE CONSIDERING

SITE OPTIONS
WE ARE CONSIDERING

Through consultations with our medical leaders, planners, architects and engineers, we established that two future hospital sites would serve our community best. One acute care site, and one acute and post-acute care site.

Each option includes Centenary hospital. That’s because the Centenary site is 24 acres, and has the most space for building new facilities beyond 2030.

OPTION 1

The first option involves renovating and redeveloping the Birchmount and Centenary hospitals.

OPTION 2

The second option involves renovating and redeveloping the General and Centenary hospitals.

OPTION 3

The third option involves renovating Centenary hospital and building a brand new hospital building on a new site that has not yet been identified.

Next steps

SHN will be reviewing feedback from our hospital and community consultations. Then our executive team and Board of Directors will select a preferred option. We will submit all three options with the preferred option identified to the Ministry of Health for review and approval to move to Stage 2.
