We are thrilled to invite you to join us and special guests in celebrating National Indigenous Peoples Day, a day to honour the rich heritage, diverse cultures, and outstanding achievements of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.

This special event will take place on June 19 from noon to 2 p.m. in our General Hospital, Lee Family Auditorium (ground floor), and virtually (see MS Teams link below), and we have an exciting lineup of activities that include traditional teachings, drumming and dancing, artistic expressions that showcase indigenous knowledge, and a smudging ceremony with sage for cleansing. It’s a fantastic opportunity for our SHN community to come together, learn from, and appreciate the traditions and wisdom of Indigenous cultures.

Smudging is a sacred practice used by many Indigenous peoples that involves burning medicinal or sacred plants to produce smoke that cleanses people and places. It’s a beautiful ritual that promotes healing, clarity, and peace.

The traditional drumming and dancing are not just a feast for the eyes and ears but also a way to connect with the stories and rhythms that have been passed down through generations. These performances are a powerful expression of identity and community.

We encourage everyone to attend and participate in this meaningful celebration. It’s a chance to show our respect, support, and solidarity with Indigenous communities in Scarborough and across Turtle Island.

Let’s come together to make this National Indigenous Peoples Day a memorable one!
