Health Equity Certificate Program
SHN is proud to offer the Health Equity Certificate Program, which has been designed to empower those involved in delivering healthcare to take a full-spectrum view of health, and to develop strategies to reduce health disparities through your work. Upon completion of this certificate program, participants will have a strong understanding of the impact of social determinants of health, and how to address them. In other words, the course helps us better meet the needs of our most vulnerable patients.
Health Equity in Action
SHN serves one of Canada’s most diverse communities, where over 600,000 residents bring a rich mix of cultures, languages, and lived experiences. Many of the patients who rely on us face overlapping challenges tied to the social determinants of health—barriers that affect access, outcomes, and overall patient experience.
To meet these challenges head-on, Health Equity in Action, a virtual monthly education series, was designed to empower our teams with the knowledge and tools to advance health equity in everyday practice. Each interactive session will:
- Spotlight one of SHN’s Centres of Excellence—including Nephrology & Chronic Disease Management, Mental Health, Women & Children’s Care, Orthopaedics, and Cardiac & Stroke Care
- Explore the social and systemic barriers patients encounter when accessing care
- Feature SHN physicians and frontline providers sharing real-world strategies and evidence-based approaches to reduce health disparities
Stand Up For Health
The Stand Up for Health learning system is built to improve patient care, through knowledge, empathy and action. As a participant, staff will step into the shoes of a young person experiencing poverty, racism, and poor education. As staff move through their stages of life, both physically in space and in time, they will be confronted with choices. Decisions will affect life trajectory, and prompt relevant statistics and discussions. The latter portion of the workshop consists of a small-group facilitated discussion, where groups will debrief, consolidate learning, and commit to action.

Anti-Black Racism e-Learning Module
SHN is proud to offer the Anti-Black Racism e-Learning Module, developed in partnership with Women’s College Hospital and leading experts in health equity. This initiative reflects our commitment to creating a culture of understanding, inclusion and belonging for both our patients and our team.
The module provides insight into the historical and ongoing impacts of anti-Black racism in Canada, explores its forms in everyday life, and offers practical strategies for addressing it in healthcare settings. Nearly 5,000 SHN team members have already completed the training, reinforcing our dedication to education and awareness as part of our Equity, Diversity and Inclusion strategy.
