Kousalya’s Journey

Mentorship fueled my growth at work.

Role: Medical Radiation Technologist, Diagnostic Imaging

“Adapting to a new home can be challenging. Mentorship brought out my confidence at work.”

My journey began when I migrated from South Asia to Scarborough, seeking a new life and new opportunities. Shortly after I arrived, I was hired for SHN’s Diagnostic Imaging (DI) department.

I was slowly adapting to the culture and behaviours of my new home, but was still struggling to find the confidence to really succeed within my role at the hospital. My manager sensed my need for support and turned to Abiramy – who had recently gone through a similar experience as a newcomer.

So, for a few shifts, Abiramy took me under her wing. I observed the way she spoke with patients and physicians, and she in turn challenged me to embrace the tools and support of my team. And while so many have provided guidance along the way, having someone who understood my background and experiences really shifted things for me.

Abiramy’s advice was invaluable, and it made me feel empowered, as if I could say, “Okay, I’ve got this.”

The ripple effect of positive mentorship extended beyond just my work; it influenced the entire DI department. And as I grew more comfortable with everything, we found that others became inspired by our story and the benefits of this special kind of mentorship. Abiramy would say, “I didn’t do any magic. I just shared my experience and gave a little help.”

This is not just my story, but that of Abiramy and many others who find their place and their voice within the heart of our health network. We stand as a vital link between cutting-edge technology and compassionate patient care.
