The government of Ontario recently expanded the Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP), and Ontarians can now begin routine breast screenings without referral if they are between the ages of 40 and 74.
This change is an opportunity for Ontarians to begin routine mammograms sooner in life, therefore potentially catching breast cancer and other health concerns earlier on.
This Breast Cancer Awareness Month and beyond, SHN encourages our community members to get screened. Our health network emphasizes the importance of routine mammograms and breast health awareness, including for cultural communities that may be medically underrepresented.
This is why SHN and key community partners are hosting the Breast Health and Awareness Seminar for Black Communities on October 26!
This event is part of an ongoing community effort to provide culturally relevant information about breast health, educational panels, and same-day screening in a safe and inclusive space. By increasing awareness in racialized communities, we can help reduce barriers to equitable health care.
Facilitators of our expert panels, including a range of healthcare specialists and patients with lived experience, have now been confirmed for this event.

Get screened
It is recommended that you get a routine mammogram every 2 years if you are between the ages of 40 and 74. SHN has Breast Health Clinics at each of our Birchmount, Centenary and General Hospitals. As Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) designated sites, our clinics can provide faster, simpler breast cancer screening for our community.
