Patients are already starting to talk enthusiastically about the new Northpine Diagnostic Imaging Department at Scarborough Health Network’s (SHN) General Hospital, which opened in February as one of the most advanced, modern imaging facilities in the GTA. The 36,000-square-foot space doubles the footprint of imaging services at General Hospital, and has been designed to provide an improved experience for patients like Gayathri and Edward—who shared about their recent appointments.

Gayathri: A calm, comforting environment

Gayathri Sutherskumar has been coming to SHN for care for over a decade, but her recent visit to the Northpine DI Department was unlike any before.

After experiencing abdominal pain, Gayathri’s oncologist referred her for a CT scan—her first appointment in the new department.

“The moment I walked in, I felt at ease. The space is so clean, modern, and welcoming. Even the CT scanner itself felt more spacious and less intimidating,” said Gayathri, referring to SHN’s new Somaton Drive CT scanner.

This scanner provides detailed imaging and features a larger bore for patients with claustrophobia. This is one of many technologically advanced additions installed in the Northpine DI Department, including a new 3T MRI; two new Interventional Radiology suites; two new nuclear SPECT-CT scanners; a new X-ray unit; new ultrasound units; and three new mammography systems.

For Gayathri, who is currently undergoing a six-month cancer treatment program, everything—from the new equipment and technology to the brighter, more open environment and compassionate staff—made a big difference and contributed to a smoother, less stressful experience.

“When you’re going through treatment, every bit of comfort matters,” she said. “The team here took the time to explain everything to me and made me feel supported. It’s clear this department was designed with patients in mind.”

Edward: Faster, smoother, more efficient

During a routine lung X-ray, 77-year-old Edward Shung’s doctor noticed an abnormal enlargement of his blood vessels and referred him right away for a CT scan. Edward arrived at SHN’s General Hospital and was pleasantly surprised to be taken to the new Northpine DI Department, where a range of specialized imaging modality areas have been brought together in one location—relieving the burden on patients who previously navigated multiple locations for their imaging needs.

“Right away, I could tell this space was different from other DI spaces I’ve visited in hospitals over the years,” Edward shared. “It’s very organized and streamlined, like it was built with flow in mind.”

Edward remarked that his scan was quick and staff worked efficiently, while still taking the time to ensure he was comfortable. He particularly appreciated how patients are seen so smoothly—from check-in at the registration kiosk, to the scan itself.

“You can tell this isn’t just an upgrade; it’s a whole new level of care.”

Edward left feeling more reassured in getting his condition diagnosed, knowing that his results would be accurate and timely and help his doctor determine the next steps in his care.

Gayathri and Edward’s experiences highlight what makes this new facility such a tremendous addition to our community. It’s exciting to open a space that enables more efficient workflows and an improved patient experience through features such as dedicated waiting rooms that accommodate diverse cultural needs; carefully planned wayfinding; enhanced privacy; and larger treatment rooms that are sized for the latest equipment. But it’s even more exciting to hear from patients who have taken a journey through the Northpine DI Department and experienced the difference for themselves.

Advancing imaging in all fields: Breast health screening at TAIBU Be You, Be Well Health and Wellness Fair

SHN was proud to partner in a Health Fair event held by TAIBU Community Health Centre in March, which brought over 30 patients to the Northpine DI Department to receive breast screenings with our new advanced machines, which now offer tomosynthesis (3D mammography, a high-tech imaging technique).

This was the first time getting mammograms for many of the attendees thanks to dedicated community outreach and engagement by TAIBU, and the expertise of SHN’s breast clinic team. SHN looks forward to offering more opportunities for our Scarborough community to get screened and learn about the breast health services available to them.
